Internships are important
Interning is probably the most important thing you can do when your in college. My internship has been quite rewarding in a sense that I got to experience the entertainment side of public relations. Working with clients like Rachael Ray and Tyra Banks did not really interest me.
With this internship I now realize that this type of public relations is really not for me. I was not really passionate about it but I am very happy that I was able to see that and realize that it was just not for me. I loved the work experience though it was great and I know it's something that I will take with me throughout my career. All my internship were quite rewarding in a sense that when I find a job I wont go into it unprepared. Experience is what lands you the job you are aiming for not G.P.A's...Your thoughts?

Public relations evolving...
As social media continues to grow and more individuals post their content online, the practice of public relations and definition of the media is expanding. We live in an age where individual voices and technology can be more influential than ever, and present real opportunities and challenges for public relations professionals. Today, public relation is everywhere you look and as technology evolves public relations will continue to evolve. The big question is where technology will take the PR industry. Since technology is evolving and social media is growing new tools will be introduced to our industry to keep up with the change. In the end PR is about getting out your message effectively and building relationships. The only thing that has really changes in public relation is the way in which the message is received. Regardless of emerging technologies that concept of PR will always remain the same and PR professionals will find a way to adapt.

Blogs
Today I devoted by day to Tyra Banks. I had to search for any news related to her. Then, created excel documents showing the links and where and when they were found. It is so mind boggling to see how influential blogs are. Most of the press roundup I found was written from bloggers. Blogs are the new way to get your news and its clearly proven itself to be what people turn to and rely on. In the field of public relations, they are something that must be monitored constantly. Your thoughts?

Learn Learn Learn
Today I was introduced to a new database, "Celebrity Date-book". It's a service that (you have to sign up for/pay for it) provides a calendar/list of events going on in NYC for celebrities with date/time/ and PR contact. It's really useful to see what’s going on and who will be in town and if our clients can be part of it. These are the types of things that I love about interning. I am learning so much everyday and finding out about new programs and databases that are important to know in our industry. I am very eager to learn more as each day passes. I had internships that have been very dull and more administrative tasks were given to me but even though internships may bot be what you expected, you will always take away something from it. There is always something you can take away from the experience and though it might not have been your best experience there is always a way to turn it into a learning experience that works to your advantage. Do you agree?

PR 24 Hours job?
Today I searched through cision point, one of PR biggest tools in searching for contacts. I was told to become very familiar with it because it would be useful when creating lists for contacts related to our clients. I worked on putting together the editorial calendar and did some administrative work for Michela. I have noticed then the people I work with are constantly searching on anything that can relate to our clients. P.R seems to consume their lives, it is a job where you need to constantly have your eyes open to anything changing within the media. It is our job to know information related to our client before our clients are aware. Thats not that easy to do, it puts a lot of pressure on us, so it is key to constantly be up to date with what's happening. Is P.R really a 24 hour job?

My Internship
I am currently interning at The Door Online, a small P.R firm by Union Square. On my first day here I was introduced to the team, which including me make up seven people. Shortly after, I was introduced to all of the clients that this firm works with. Our clients vary from all different fields and areas. They are Rachael Ray, Tyra Banks, Train, Cheribundi, Windmade, Chef Spike Mendelssohn, Chef John Besh, and Chef Marcella Valladolid. They have other clients but these are the ones that I was introduced to and told to get familiar with. My first day was simple enough; I learned about the different things I would be in charge of. This being my first internship my boss, Michela, taught me everything that I need to know.
Michela is really great to work with. It seems that she is actually willing to teach me. This week I learned things that I never knew. Part of my responsibilities here is to send out the news roundup for the day. Basically, anything that is relevant to our clients gets sent out to the entire team. On my first day I was given an ongoing project by the entire team. They wanted me to put together an excel document of the 2011 editorial calendar of all the publications each team member listed(there was over 25 publications.) Michela writes a list of things I have to get done before the day is over.
