PR 24 Hours job?

Today I searched through cision point, one of PR biggest tools in searching for contacts. I was told to become very familiar with it because it would be useful when creating lists for contacts related to our clients. I worked on putting together the editorial calendar and did some administrative work for Michela. I have noticed then the people I work with are constantly searching on anything that can relate to our clients. P.R seems to consume their lives, it is a job where you need to constantly have your eyes open to anything changing within the media. It is our job to know information related to our client before our clients are aware. Thats not that easy to do, it puts a lot of pressure on us, so it is key to constantly be up to date with what's happening. Is P.R really a 24 hour job?

  1. I haven't worked a full time PR job YET but my guess is it's going to be very time consuming. I never thought an Account Executive was a 9-5 position. There is always work to be done. From my experience working at my internship, there were always media lists to be made, follow-up calls/emails, press kits, etc. It was never-ending. But I did learn that if you love what you do its less of a chore and more of a privilege.

  2. PR in fashion is a 24 hour job. I work with a lot of clients from europe, so I am constantly working and communicating at all hours of the night. Even as a intern, I work 9-6 on work days, and sometimes on event days, 7-7. I think the time you do in PR depends on what kind, and if your willing to be that much better than everyone else. Even though I hate working 12 hour days, it makes other work seem easy, and me look better than other young professionals trying to get the same job as me. We're young so working long hours now will pay off in the end!
